Trekking in Tibet

Tibet is a vast and beautiful country. It’s a land shrouded in religion, tradition and culture in a landscape that’s unique and breathtaking.  For many centuries the only form of transport in Tibet was walking and riding the hardy Tibetan ponies. The Tibetans as a people are  nomads and traders, they spend a lot of their time traversing the country with caravans of yaks and sheep, trading salt and yak butter for other goods they need to survive in the harsh and barren landscape. Walking through these  mind blowing landscapes is second nature to the Tibetan people and they have formed many caravan routes through the country. Its natural, with so much to offer that people want to come to Tibet for trekking, not only along the caravan routes but amongst the mountains as well.

Not only do the Tibetan people walk for trade but also they make pilgrimages’, the Holy mount Kailash and Lake  Manasarovar are two major pilgrimage sites. Thousand upon thousands of Tibetans and Buddhist form around the world flock here every year to circumnavigate the lake or the mountain. It’s a spectacle to witness, not only the scene of humanity here, but the pure magnificent of the landscape. One can well imagine why Lord Siva choose this mountain as his home, one can imagine him sitting on his throne surveying the entire world form his lofty view point.

From the southern part of Tibet you can get amazing views of the Himalayas, including Mount Everest(8848) and  Mt Xishapagma(8212m). Its possible and easy to trek to and around Everest base camp on the Tibet side, it’s a beautiful and fascinating area to explore.

Tibet, as a trekking destination is perhaps one of the most remote and rugged in the world. The facilities are limited and trekking here is done mainly on a camping basis, where your support crew constitutes a herd of yaks. Its one of the last places in the world where you can experience pristine wilderness and a true sense of adventure and exploration. Imagine walking in a place that has been pre trod with such history, culture and tradition, close your eyes and listen to nothing but the sound of your own feet and the wind, then open them again and inhale your breath as you orientate yourself with your spectacular surroundings. Truly trekking in Tibet is a challenging and rewarding and life changing experience, one that we here at ATC can arrange for you.
